We run monthly training sessions at HMP Springhill as part of their in house hospitality course. These sessions involve a combination of theory and practical based learning as prisoners are introduced to working with coffee. Latte art competitions as part of the training brings a healthy level of competition and gives the guys a real sense of achievement!
After completing our initial training sessions, those who are keen to develop their skills further are invited onto a more in depth course - The NewGround Academy.
This intensive three day course covers all the key areas and skills that prisoners will need to work in the coffee industry. With this qualification, guys will be in a great position to apply for a job in the industry post-release.
Before release, prisoners at HMP Spring Hill can obtain the opportunity of Release On Temporary Licence (ROTL), meaning they can leave the prison for work placements during the day.
We advocate amongst local coffee shops for them to register as work placements, creating opportunities for prisoners to take what they've learned on the NewGround Academy and put it into practice by working in the coffee industry. This invaluable experience and chance to earn helps set them up for success upon release.
Having received expert training and extended coffee industry work experience with businesses sympathetic to employing ex-offenders, our hope is that the guys we have supported will be set up as best as possible to obtain a job upon release from prison.
All NewGround Academy graduates are welcomed into our alumni community upon release, through which we provide continued support and help with industry job applications.
